Recently, the power cable system based on domestically produced 500kV AC XLPE insulation materials, jointly developed by the State Key Laboratory of High-Efficiency Special Cable Technology in collaboration with Wanma Macromolecule and other organizations, has successfully passed the type tests.
This power cable system is manufactured with domestically produced 500kV insulation materials from Wanma Macromolecule, and its performance meets the relevant requirements of GB/T 22078 and IEC 62067.

The project team has dedicated itself to tackling key challenges and has achieved multiple key technological innovations in raw material formulation development, cable structure design and manufacturing processes. Based on the research of ultra-pure polyethylene base materials, the team independently developed a novel composite antioxidant system and a controllable cross-linking system. This significantly improves scorch resistance while greatly reducing micro‑pores and impurities in the insulation, lowering the dielectric dissipation factor of the insulation, thereby enhancing the electrical stability of the insulation under high temperatures and high electrical fields, successfully resulting in domestically produced 500kV XLPE insulation materials with overall performance reaching the internationally advanced level.

Wanma Macromolecule’s 500kV insulation materials have once again successfully passed the type tests, verifying that the product meets the design and operational requirements for 500kV EHV power cables. This achievement breaks the long-term technical monopoly of overseas enterprises in this field and marks that Wanma Macromolecule has acquired the capability to manufacture insulation materials for 500kV EHV cables.
Looking ahead, the project team will continue to advance the technical iteration of EHV insulation materials. Leveraging the integrated advantages of industry-university-research-application collaboration, the team will accelerate the industrialization and engineering application of 500kV insulation materials. These efforts will support the development of new-type power systems in China, provide localized solutions for domestic power grid upgrading and offshore wind power project construction, and enhance the independent controllability and global competitiveness of China’s EHV cable industry chain.
